1)Consider
the following about Aditya L1 :
1)The Halo Orbit insertion (HOI) of Aditya L1 was achieved
at approximately 4:00 PM
2) The final phase of maneuver involved firing of control
engines for a short duration. The orbit of Aditya L1 spacecraft was located
roughly 1.5 million Kilometres from earth on a continuously moving Sun – Earth
line, with an orbital period of about 177.86 earth days.
3)The specific halo orbit is selected to ensure a mission
lifetime of 5 years, minimizing station keeping maneuvers and thus fuel

11) Consider the following about Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) :
1)There
is a thrust world over for a strategy to use nuclear power that could reduce
reliance on fossil fuels over the coming years. Small capacity atomic
power plants, popularly called Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), with their unique
features of modularity, scalability, small footprint and improved safety
present themselves as an attractive option for repurposing of retiring
coal-based thermal power station sites.
2) Deploying
Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) across the country especially in locations not
suitable for large nuclear plants, can produce large amount of low-carbon
electricity. In order to move away from fossil fuel consumption, SMRs can
be installed and operated for repurposing the aging fossil fuel-based power
plants.
3)However, SMRs are not expected to
serve as replacement to conventional large-sized nuclear power plants, which
serve as base load plants.
4)Nuclear power plants are installed
and operated in line with stringent regulatory requirements to contain
radiation and to avoid exposure to public in all circumstances. The
techno-commercial aspects of SMRs are still in initial stages even globally and
its large-scale deployment depends on various factors including regulatory harmonization
globally by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), especially considering
emergency planning zone and public acceptance.
5)Small Modular Reactors (SMR) is a
promising technology in industrial decarbonization especially where there is a
requirement of reliable and continuous supply of power. India is
considering steps for development of SMR, to fulfil its commitment to Clean
Energy transition.

12)Consider
the following about Miyawaki method of plantation :
1)The
Miyawaki method of plantation was pioneered in the 70s by Japanese botanist and
expert in plant ecology Mr. Akira Miyawaki. This technique of plantation
involves planting native trees, shrubs and groundcover plants within every
square metre. This method is ideal for small parcels of land and creates dense
canopy layer of tall trees.
2)The
species chosen for Miyawaki plantation is typically of plants which do not
require a lot of maintenance and can survive harsh weather and water-scarce
conditions and grow rapidly in existing conditions yielding thick pockets of
green cover.
3)The pilot project of Miyawaki plantation in SECL will help in
increasing the green cover in and around the Gevra mine (Chattisgarh) , the
largest coal mine of the country, in a shorter span of time. The indigenous
species of fruit bearing, avenue and ornamental trees would help the local
communities and wildlife. The forest developed under the project would also
play a key role in absorbing the dust particles and regulating surface
temperature.

moderate earthquakes, and fluctuations in seismic activity.
2)Nepal and the neighbouring northern part of India, situated near the
active faults of the Himalayan region, are highly seismically active areas
prone to frequent earthquakes due to collision tectonics, where the Indian
plate subducts beneath the Eurasian Plate.
3)Data indicates increase in earthquake activity in the year 2023 and it
was mainly attributed to the activation of the Almora fault in Western Nepal.
This activation triggered significant main shock earthquakes on January 24,
2023 (M:5.8), October 3, 2023 (M:6.2), and November 3, 2023 (M:6.4).
4)These mainshocks, accompanied by subsequent aftershocks, have led to
an increased frequency of earthquakes in the year 2023. However, the background
seismicity remained unchanged during this period.
5)The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has published the Seismic Zoning
Map of India, ranging from Zone II to V and offers guidelines for implementing

liquefaction features like multiple sand dykes and sand sills have been
identified by scientists in an active fault in northeastern region (NER),
called Kopili fault (KF) zone which is known to have experienced large
earthquakes in 1869 and 1943.
2)The
study indicates that paleoseismic investigations can help trace and understand
the history of earthquakes and help us prepare for the future.
3)The
occurrence of great earthquakes in the past, for which no historical or
instrumental records are available, can be identified in the form of
geological, geomorphological, fluvial signatures and radiocarbon dating, to
arrive at the most crucial aspect of recurrence period of great/major
earthquakes in the region. 4)Liquefaction or transformation of a granular
material from a solid to liquefied state due to increased pore water pressure
is crucial secondary evidence of earthquakes. It occurs mostly in soft
sedimentary sequences especially interbedded sand and silt or clay. The
structures resulting from liquefaction include sand dykes, sand blows, sand
veins, pseudonodules, convolute bedding, load structure, and so on. This is important for designing bridges and big
buildings to withstand future large earthquakes.

- To reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 33 to 35
percent by 2030 from 2005 level; and
- To achieve about 40 percent cumulative electric power
installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030.
Consider
the following :
1)These
two targets have been achieved well ahead of the time. As on 31st October,
2023; the cumulative electric
power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources is 186.46
MW, which is the 43.81% of the total cumulative
electric power installed capacity. As per the third national
communication submitted by India to the
UNFCCC in December 2023, the emission intensity of its GDP has been reduced by
33 percent between 2005 and 2019.
2)In August 2022, India updated its NDC according to which
target to reduce emissions intensity of its GDP has been enhanced to 45 percent
by 2030 from 2005 level, and the target on cumulative electric power installed
capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources has been enhanced to 50%

35)Consider
the following about Cold Dark Matter (CDM) :
1)Scientists have found a new approach to explore cold dark
matter (CDM), a hypothetical dark matter that constitutes 25 percent of the
current Universe.
2)In
the current universe, nearly 70 per cent constitutes dark energy whereas 25 per
cent is dark matter – about both of which there is scanty knowledge, till date.
3)The
nature of dark matter and its interactions with the rest of the matter remains
a mystery. Scientists have, so far, been able to study a miniscule area of the
Universe which comprises everything -- the galaxies, stars, constellations, and
meteors to name a few. It is very difficult
to determine what the constituents of cold dark matter are. The confusion is
escalated because of the two models used to study CDM namely the particle
physics model and the cosmological model were not in agreement.
4)The
cosmological model provides a description of the largest-scale structures and
dynamics of the universe and allows study of fundamental questions about its
origin, structure, evolution, and ultimate fate while the particle physics
model describes the most basic building blocks of the universe. The
success rate of the standard cosmological model has been good in recent
decades.
5)One
of the promising candidates of CDM is the Weakly Interacting Massive Particles
(WIMP). Such particle arises naturally in extensions of standard model of
particle physics and predict the correct energy density of the CDM for
plausible range of interaction strength (WIMP miracle). However, inspite of
intensive searches and orders of magnitude improvement in the sensitivity of
lab experiments (e.g. Xenon based experiments), WIMP has not yet been detected.
In addition, the parameter space suggested by the WIMP miracle had mostly been
ruled out.
